Jacques Cartier & the gem trade

Bazaar

As well as visiting the Maharajas on his trips to India, Jacques would also spend a fair amount of time looking for gemstones to take back to Europe. I’ve loved meeting the descendants of the gem-dealers he met (many of them still in the same business, several generations on).

I adore this photo of my great-grandfather on his first trip out East in 1911, 27 years old, surrounded by those wonderful little white packages of treasure.

He would cast his expert eye over pearls, diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires and bargain over the best. Before long the precious glittering stones that he has chosen in the hot bazaars of India would find a new home within the delicate Cartier creations that graced the pale corseted society belles of London, Paris and New York.
